I’m not a hardcore environmentalist. I’m just a guy who spends a lot of time in the woods and doesn’t want those woods to disappear.

Over time, I’ve picked up a few simple habits — nothing extreme — that make my hikes and trips a little kinder to the places I visit.

1. Carry one small trash bag

One grocery bag. That’s it.
I pick up wrappers, cans, random stuff. Takes almost no effort.

2. Avoid single-use bottles

A lightweight reusable bottle saves plastic — and weight.

3. Stay on trail

Not just for safety — to protect plants and soil. Some areas take years to recover from a single shortcut.

4. Use biodegradable soap

Especially on camping trips. Water sources don’t need our chemical experiments.

5. Buy less gear

The best sustainability tip nobody talks about?
Just stop buying unnecessary stuff.

6. Support local trail groups

A few dollars or volunteer hours go a long way. Little habits add up, especially when thousands of hikers do them.
