I used to pack like a confused raccoon. Too much, too little, or all the wrong stuff. After enough disasters — including forgetting socks on a winter trip — I finally figured out a system that works.

Rule #1: Lay everything out first

Seeing it all spread out makes it obvious what’s ridiculous. Do you really need three jackets for a two-day trip? Probably not.

Rule #2: Pack for the weather you’ll get, not the weather you want

The PNW lies. Always bring a backup layer.

Rule #3: Two pairs of shoes max

One for walking. One for not walking. Done.

Rule #4: Toiletries must fit in ONE pouch

If it doesn’t fit, it stays home.

Rule #5: Chargers get their own pouch

Trust me. It saves your sanity at night.

Rule #6: The “half rule”

Pack what you think you need.
Then remove half. That’s pretty much it. Nothing fancy — but it works every time.
