I’ve tried being super organized. Didn’t work.
So now I keep my hiking stuff stored in the simplest way possible — just enough structure so I can find things, but not enough to feel like a chore.

Here’s what I actually do.

1. One bin for clothes, one for gear

That’s it.
Bin #1: shirts, socks, base layers.
Bin #2: gloves, flashlight, rain cover, sit pad, etc.

2. Backpack stays packed

At least 70%. Water filter, first aid kit, extra granola bar, headlamp — always in there. Makes spontaneous hikes easier.

3. A single hook for jackets

Rain jacket, puffy, windbreaker — same hook. No thinking required.

4. A checklist taped to the door

It’s dumb but helpful. The list has 8 items. I check it before leaving. I forget fewer things now.

5. “Reset day” once a month

I empty everything, clean out crumbs (so many crumbs), repack.

You don’t need a Pinterest-worthy gear wall. You just need a system you’ll actually stick to.
